English Language Classes will assist Newcomers to Canada in improving their speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills in English. Eligible newcomers may advance their skills with a qualified English Language teacher in face-to-face and online classes.
As a Suncrest College student, your studies will follow the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). The CLB describes the different skill levels of adults who are learning English as a subsequent language (ESL). Currently the College English Language program includes instruction for people from CLB 1-8.
Instructors in College’s ESL program will assess student progress using the Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) system mandated by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada). PBLA is integrated into the classroom, and is a collaborative effort between teacher and student. Each student will receive their own Language Companion binder in which to collect their portfolio and set their own language learning goals.
We also offer weekly Conversation Circles. In these informal sessions, students spend time with a facilitator, speaking and listening to conversational English. Conversation Circles are a great companion to LINC Homestudy and English Online classes.
If face-to-face is not an option we can also make a referral for the Online English Stage 1-2 program offered through the Government of Saskatchewan.
All English as Second Language Programs are provided at Cumberland College through funding provided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan.
